Legal fees from Russia

Attorney remuneration from Russia raises questions about legality and morality. In a recent case, it is reported that Russia allegedly paid the lawyer of the so-called “zoo murderer” Robert Unger 6,000 euros per day. These reports have raised considerable questions. Professional lawyer Volker Römermann explains that it is not fundamentally unproblematic if a lawyer is paid by a third party, including a foreign state, as long as the sources of the money are legal and no money laundering is involved. However, there have also been accusations that sensitive information may have been passed on to the Russian donor. These allegations raise complex legal and moral issues, particularly with regard to the protection of witness testimony and the influence of foreign states on court proceedings.

Unger himself refers to his duty of confidentiality and has not commented on the allegations. In view of the EU sanctions against Russia, legal services for certain Russian clients are currently severely restricted. The question of whether the lawyer’s actions violate applicable sanctions also remains open. The case is attracting attention not only in Germany, but also internationally, as it shows how geopolitical tensions can have an impact at an individual level.
